Public notice: Sussex IFCA minimum size (fish, crustacea and mollusc) byelaw 2021

Regulatory Notice; Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009, sections 155 and 156

Notice is hereby given that Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (Sussex IFCA) intends to apply to the Minister for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for confirmation of the Minimum Size (Fish, Crustacea and Mollusc) Byelaw 2021 .

The purpose of this byelaw is to manage the sustainable commercial and recreational exploitation of sea fisheries resources within the Sussex IFC District. The Minimum Size (Fish, Crustacea and Mollusc) Byelaw 2021 introduces measures intended to conserve marine fish, crustacea and mollusc populations by controlling the removal of named species below defined minimum sizes. The future measures seek to enable more immature animals to reach maturity, and therefore contribute to the spawning stock and juvenile recruitment.

The named species and minimum sizes are defined in two separate schedules. Schedule 1a applies to any person fishing within the District. Schedule 1b applies to any person, unless carried out under the authority of a fishing vessel licence issued by the Marine Management Organisation or other devolved UK fishery administration.

The Byelaw also includes exemptions and dispensations, including those that enable certain species that can be used as live bait and the permitted removal for scientific, stocking, educational or breeding purposes.

The full byelaw, regulatory notice, impact assessment and associated guidance information can be found here: www.sussex-ifca.gov.uk

Any person wishing to object or comment on the confirmation of the above byelaw must do so in writing before the 17th June 2021 to: Marine Conservation and Enforcement Team, Marine Management Organisation, Lancaster House, Hampshire Court, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE4 7YH, Email ifcabyelaws@marinemanagement.org.uk

AND send a copy of this representation marked ‘Byelaw Consultation’ to the Sussex IFCA, 12a Riverside Business Centre, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 6RE, Email admin@sussex-ifca.gov.uk
